The gondola lift from Fiesch to the car-free Fiescheralp is the fastest gondola lift in Switzerland with a speed of up to 7 metres per second.
(as of July 2023)
Opening of the public transport hub: The new public transport hub in Fiesch was officially opened on Saturday, 7 December 2019. It brings together the train, PostBus and cable car in one place. The flagship project for public and tourist transport offers real added value for all travellers and guests thanks to short, convenient and barrier-free transfer routes - whether for winter sports enthusiasts, hikers, tourists or commuters. The newly launched public transport hub consists of a 10-passenger gondola lift to the Fiescheralp, the new Matterhorn Gotthard Railway (MGBahn) station and a PostBus terminal. The "public transport hub", which will cost around CHF 47 million, is a joint project between Aletsch Bahnen AG and Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn AG as builders and the architect and investor Hans Ritz. Aletsch Bahnen AG is taking on the lion's share of the project at a cost of around CHF 24 million. The Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn contributed CHF 17.6 million to the major project. Architect Ritz Hans invested CHF 6 million. Construction of this intergenerational project began in October 2018, meaning that the partners involved only had a construction period of just over a year. The existing structure was extended and the car park integrated for the gondola lift mountain station. The new gondola lift transports up to 1,880 passengers per hour, which massively increases the transport capacity compared to the previous feeder lift. The increased comfort and the corresponding improvements in quality are greatly appreciated by guests.
Expansion of the Fiesch car park (purchase of additional land and improved management):
As part of the Fiesch public transport hub project, the Board of Directors of Aletsch Bahnen AG has decided to purchase a plot of land next to the existing car park in Fiesch. This was done in order to meet the additional demand for car parking spaces at the Fiesch valley station in future. At the same time, the existing car parks were equipped with a ticketing system from Skidata in order to improve the management of these spaces. The corresponding work was completed before Christmas 2020.
