Walking and hiking in the Aletsch Arena

Walking paradise in the UNESCO World Heritage Site

300 kilometres of prepared and well-secured hiking and walking trails: become one with the largely pristine nature of the Aletsch Arena. Find yourself invigorated by the fresh Valais mountain air on your hikes. There is much to look forward to in the Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage Site: the magnificent Great Aletsch Glacier, one stunning 4000m+ mountain after the next, mystical stone pine forests that go back up to 1000 years, spectacular view points and a whole lot of peace of mind. Strap on your hiking boots and off you go!

300 km

of prepared and secured hiking trails are waiting to be discovered by you.

1000 years

old are the oldest Swiss stone pines in the Aletsch forest.

5 suspension bridges

can be found in the Aletsch Goms region. These promise adventures on airy paths - hiking with thrills and increased adrenalin.

  • Tip: Get the free Aletsch Arena app for your smartphone. Find out about cable car departure times, restaurant opening hours, the status of hiking trails and much more.

New since summer 2023

Explore the Geology Walkway on Moosfluh and learn in a fun, hands-on way how global warming is affecting the mountain, or set off on the trail of the Belle Epoque as you follow the new themed trail “Old Hotel Jungfrau-Eggishorn”.

Combine your hike with a visit to a view point

The viewing platforms of the four view points Hohfluh, Moosfluh, Bettmerhorn and Eggishorn stand out for their magnificent views of the Great Aletsch Glacier. So be sure to take advantage of the opportunity to visit a view point if you’re hiking nearby.

The right ticket for your hike

The Aletsch Bahnen cable cars, gondola lifts or chairlifts offer you a comfortable ride to the starting point of your hiking adventure in the Aletsch Arena.

Over the suspension bridges of the Aletsch Arena

“Über sieben Brücken musst du gehn” (“Seven bridges you must cross”) is the title of a song by Peter Maffay. Even if the Aletsch Arena and the Obergoms region has only five – the suspension bridges Belalp-Riederalp, Aspi-Titter, the Goms Bridge, the small Massa Bridge near Bitsch and the Bodmer Bridge in Obergoms – there is certainly no shortage of spectacle and thrills.

Mountain tours and alpine hikes

Are you sure-footed, with a head for heights and looking for the ultimate hiking challenge? Then, the demanding mountain tours and alpine hikes are just the thing for you. Take the UNESCO High Altitude Trail, for example, a spectacular hike from Bettmerhorn mountain station to Eggishorn mountain station. The partly exposed – but well-secured – ridge trail makes for an adrenaline-pumping experience.

Barrier-free trails

The Aletsch Arena also makes it possible for wheelchair users to enjoy outings to experience the beneficial effect of nature and explore the region. Quite a few of the hiking trails are barrier-free and no problem at all for a wheelchair or a pram/stroller.
