Getting to the Aletsch Arena by rail and road

Off to the Valais holiday paradise

Travelling to the Aletsch Arena holiday paradise is easy and straightforward whether by car or public transport. The destinations in the valley all offer good connections for both options. If you’re staying up on the car-free plateau, you can use the car parks in the valley, and the cable cars are only ever a short walk from the station. Please note: in winter, the car-free roads on Riederalp, Bettmeralp and Fiescheralp are covered in snow. So it’s a good idea to book the luggage transport service from the mountain station to your holiday accommodation for your arrival and departure. On the other hand, all this snow means that you enjoy ski-in, ski-out during your stay and can use a sledge as a means of transport. At the end of your stay, remember to allow enough time for the walk to the mountain station and the cable car ride down into the valley.

To avoid wasting time queuing at the ticket office for the journey from the valley to the car-free plateau or back, buy your cable car and ski pass and book the baggage cart in the webshop before you come.

Coming by train

All the holiday resorts in the valley of the Aletsch Arena have very good public transport connections. The Mörel – Riederalp, Bettmeralp valley station – Bettmeralp and Fiesch – Fiescheralp feeder railways run all year round and are part of the SBB GA and half-fare travelcard network.

Coming by car

The journey by car to Mörel, Bettmeralp valley station, Lax, Fiesch and Fieschertal is straightforward. The roads and passes into Valais are all very well maintained; alternatively you can use the shuttle train Lötschberg, Furka oder Simplon. Please note that the Furka and Oberalp passes are closed in winter. Large outdoor and indoor car parks are provided at the cable car valley stations.

Riederalp West and Ried-Mörel

From Mörel-Filet, there’s a gondola lift to take you to Riederalp West. Halfway up you have the option of getting off in Ried-Mörel. There are parking facilities in Mörel right next to the valley station and others in the immediate vicinity. Coming by train, you only have to walk about 40 metres from the station and cross the main road, and you’re right outside the valley station.

Riederalp Mitte and Greich

From Mörel-Filet, there’s a cable car to take you to Riederalp Mitte, stopping halfway up in Greich to let passengers off. There are parking facilities in Mörel right next to the valley station and others in the immediate vicinity. Coming by train, you only have to walk about 40 metres from the station and cross the main road, and you’re right outside the valley station.

Bettmeralp and Betten Dorf

If it’s Bettmeralp you’re heading for, take the train or car to Bettmeralp valley station. There’s plenty of parking available there. By the way, a parking space indoors costs the same as an outdoor space. From Bettmeralp valley station, the large-cabin cable car takes you straight up to car-free Bettmeralp, while the small cable car goes via Betten-Dorf. It’s a short ride of just 7 and 9 minutes respectively. Please note that luggage is only allowed in the large-cabin cable car. Once at the top, it’s worth taking advantage of the luggage service to your accommodation, because it’s actually about 1.3 kilometres from one end of the alp to the other.

Arriving in Bettmeralp

Fiesch and Fiescheralp

To get to Fiescheralp, take the 10-seater gondola from the public transport hub in Fiesch. There is parking at the public transport hub and the train stops right by the gondola valley station. It doesn’t get much easier than that. It’s just a 9-minute ride onto Fiescheralp. Up there, everything is within easy walking distance.

Luggage helper

If you’re spending your holidays in the Aletsch Arena on the car-free plateau, the transport of two pieces of luggage per person from the valley is free of charge. For any additional cases, bags etc., you can book a baggage cart for a fee. The carts are designed to let you stack several pieces of luggage and take the cart into the cable car with you. Aletsch Bahnen also offer lockers and luggage storage.

Taxi and luggage transport services locally

In the car-free resorts of Riederalp and Bettmeralp, you can book local taxi companies in advance to transport you and your luggage on arrival and departure. In winter the job is done by snowmobile, in summer by electro-mobile. On Fiescheralp, which is also car-free, the cable car companies arrange luggage transport on request. Prior booking is required.

Ask your host (hotel or holiday apartment) if they offer a luggage service.
