Lake Märjelen is located very close to both the Great Aletsch Glacier and the Gletscherstube mountain restaurant. In the past, it assumed the role of a glacier lake quite naturally when the glacier was at its peak. A glacier lake is one that is prevented from draining, either temporarily or permanently, by a glacier. During the 19th century, Lake Märjelensee was an impressive sight, reaching 1.6 kilometres long and 500 metres wide. Today the mountain lake is known by the name “Hintersee” and is still about 100 metres in length.
