It’s Europe’s most beautiful half marathon: but the 21.2km route covering a difference in altitude of 1,050m also makes for an impressive hiking experience.

Starting at the Bettmeralp cable-car mountain station (1,950m), first follow the route through the village of Bettmeralp. Continue via the Baschweri Adventure Park, the Forest Promenade and Lake Bettmersee to Riederalp and then up to Riederfurka. From there, the trail well and truly becomes a panoramic hike: the route section around the Riederhorn offers a thrilling view of the Rhone valley and the four-thousand-metre peaks of Valais. The rest of the hike – from Riederfurka via Hohfluh, Moosfluh, and Hohbalm up to Bettmerhorn mountain station (2,647m) – is dominated by the magnificent view of the Great Aletsch Glacier. From Bettmerhorn mountain station, take the gondola back to Bettmeralp.

The Aletsch Half Marathon attracts 2,500 mountain runners every year. See for yourself what it’s like to take part in this first-class running event.
