Cultivated with pride, lived out with joy – that is certainly true of the traditions and customs in the Aletsch Arena. The delightful Weekend of Traditions means that anyone can experience this living approach to history for themselves. Prepare to find yourself transported back to a time when running water and electrical sockets were still something of a luxury.
Full details of the programme 2025 follows, but here’s a taste of what to expect:
The weekend kicks off with a guided tour through the rustic village of Betten – the origin of today’s tourist resort Bettmeralp. The tour is led by Edelbert Mattig, who offers fascinating insights into local history and life, and afterwards invites guests to enjoy a traditional Valais-style “z’Abund.”

On the Saturday, look forward to a street festival featuring traditional music, crafts and delicacies of bygone days, in line with the motto – Inschi Choscht, inschers Handwärch, inschi Traditione! [Our food, crafts and traditions!]
A guest canton will be represented by a yodelling club, he will also provide musical accompaniment for both the morning field mass and the street festival.
On the Sunday, Gilihüsine (an early form of Hornussen) is among the activities. And if you like, you can even take part in the tournament.
